Just For a Moment

Last week I wrote about finding pockets of quiet in the world so we can be ourselves.  Today I want to write about finding quietness within our minds.

All of us think thousands of thoughts every day.  We can’t not have thoughts—it’s how we’re wired as humans.

What we can do, though, is be aware that we are having thoughts.

Not judging our thoughts or steering the direction of them, but occasionally noticing that we are having thoughts.

Going further, if we notice our thoughts, then maybe we notice that we are a person who is having these thoughts. And truly getting that we are a person who has thoughts is huge!

When we get this, we understand that our thoughts are not our minds, our thoughts are generated by our minds.

Thoughts are not the essence of our mind; they are a function of our mind.

This understanding gives us tremendous freedom.  Our thoughts are only thoughts—we don’t have to buy into them.  We don’t even have to have them if we don’t want them.

What if, just for a moment, we decide to set aside our thoughts and see what’s there?

What if, just for a moment, we choose to go quiet in our minds and just be?

This, my fellow seekers, is what happens when we tire of the constant chatter in our brains and let go.

This is where presence is found.

This is where love is found.

This is where the Divine is found.

Finding pockets of quiet in the world is important.  Finding pockets of quiet in your mind is equally important.

See what’s waiting for you there.
